很多ham都知道，玩无线电尤其是玩dx，在很大程度上是靠天吃饭，传播来了，几瓦功率、长线天线也能打个几万公里；没有传播时，再好的设备也无用武之地。什么时候有传播？成了令ham非常纠结的问题。解决办法基本上是靠经验，即使是现在流行的预测软件实际上也是靠积累下来的经验数据。这种预测就像天气预报一样，准不准还得看老天爷的脸色。
又是米国人，就像互联网那样，把最初军用的技术转化为民用，把mil-std 188-141a和mil-std 188-110通信协议用于业余无线电，搞了一个计算机软件pcale——计算机自动链路建立。这玩意的核心就是靠事实说话：现在的传播怎么样？在哪个频段有传播？哪个频段能够传播到哪里？基本的工作过程是：软件不停的扫描监听你的系统所能接收的（或者是你选择的）各个频段，逐个频段发送一个包含你的呼号（地址）的短数字信息，并等待其他电台的回应，当接收到一个回应时，软件发出提示，然后你就可以以话音或文字形式进行普通的通联了。
目前，全世界已经有几千个电台加入该网络，并且每天24小时运行这个软件，还有专门的网站报告目前在线的电台以及每个收到信息的电台实时上报的信息。
