i have had the ic-756proiii on the air for about two weeks now; it’s a great radio! i used it for the arrl rtty roundup…simply amazing! no “monkey chatter” intermodulation products out of the receiver at all with loud stations close by; including when the rig is on preamp 2!. the rtty filter is a dream.
i owned the yaesu ft-2000 and used it in the cqww cw contest. the ft-2000 is not ready for prime time. the dsp is clicky and clunky, but worst of all, i could not make cw qsk work (i could not hear between dits and dahs!)! no help from yaesu, either (a “we don’t know, we’ll get back to you” e-mail, but no further contact). i made about 50 qs, and went to my standby ic-746pro to finish the contest. i sold the ft-2000 the next week and bought the ic-756proiii: a much better investment.
the ic-746pro has an excellent receiver, but the ic-756proiii is even better. icom service is second to none. actual knowledgeable technicians e-mail and speak with you!
i told a ham friend that i would not need or use the spectrum scope in the ic-756proiii; i was wrong. the scope is an excellent aid for finding openings in a crowded contest, and for seeing whether your frequency is getting poached.
cw keying and qsk break-in is smooth. voice operation has custom microphone equalization for getting good sound out of any mic or soundcard.
in summary: nice job, icom!
