great contest, i guess i managed to realize almost maximum potential of myself
and station. no technical problems and did not even get sleepy for 48 hours.
only lost my voice by the end and had to talk real quiet because it was so
painful. i made exactly 600 2nd radio qsos. they are s&p and qsys as i do
almost all the cqing on the 1st radio. the antenna set up with 4 rotating
towers (45, 45, 42 and 35 meters) in my station now is:
160m: full size 4 square with 60 ground mounted 1/4wl radials per vertical,
wire vertical from 45m tower with 3 radials.
80m: full size 4 square with 60 ground mounted 1/4wl passive radials per
vertical and active elevated 1 radial per vertical, 3 el yagi at 36m height,
low dipole inverted v
40m: full size 3 over 3 yagis at 42/22, coil loaded 3 over 3 at 42/22,
optibeam
17-4 (3 elements on 40) at 42m, dipole
20m: 4xjp2000 tribanders at 45/36/27/18, 3xjp2000 tribanders at 34/25/16, 5
over 5 full size at 42/22, optibeam 17-4 (4 elements on 20) at 42m, jp2000
tribander at 15m

i would not have imagined being able to match ben and ranko. really pity that
ranko dropped out this way. we are very close with ben and look forward to see
the other scores that are still unknown. toni has its own planet for sure, one
hell of a job indeed and great write up! and i see that i was sort of lucky
that andy, m6t, had to do the contest in a bad shape without any sleep and i
can only imagine how badly you would have beaten me if you had the luxury of
having station ready friday noon and take a 4 hour nap before the contest like
me:)
i was trying to maximize dx contacts and zones this year. quite happy with low
band mults. 160 was awesome! i was very lucky to go there first night already
at 02.30 as i did qsy with d4c and as i got the frequency just did some cqs
just in case. well after having west coast coming back sure i could not leave.
k7rl and others had simply miraculous signals, better than 20m. absolutely
unbelievable and indeed that might have been the 160 cqww ssb us west coast
propagation of a lifetime for me. some very nice qsys to 160m worked with
ba4rf, hc8a and zs9x. carribians were coming very well and it was wonderful to
have vp2ec calling in with outstanding signal and doing quick and easy qsys to
80 and 40 immidiately for 3 mults. 9m2ax called in on the last hour for double
mult.
80m was also great. very good na signals and also zl/vk/ybs coming very well.
spent the last hour on 80m and really happy to have zone 2 calling in in the
last 10 minutes and then kp4ke for last mult at 23.59! first day i was very
glad to find vk9dwx cqing on 3797 with no one answering. i deliberately went to
cq to 80m last day hoping to get zone 19 that i was missing on all low bands.
what a joy to have rw0ll calling in and doing beautiful qsys to 40m and 160!
just perfect!
40m was lousy as always. tremendous qrm and bad conditions. spent a lot of time
there but did not get much going. it was great working nl7z more than an hour
after my sunrise for double mult, unfortunately qsy to 80 did not work. but 30
minutes later olli, oa4ww called in and we made a great qsy to 80m 1.5h after
my sunrise! thanks!
20m was the money band as always. us propagation was fairly short. from 10.30
to 16.30 utc both days and did not manage to make even 1000 na. still had a lot
of mults coming in. wonderful to work 43 vks and 35 bys. time to make bets when
bys will overcome jas in contests:) nice qsys to 15m with tr8ca (2 double mults
from z36!), 3da0dj, c6apr and others. i was really hoping for 40 zones on 20m
but failed miserably to get 31 (!) and 37. i just don't know why no kh6 guys
ever showed up and i also did not find any:( also did not succeed to qsy j28ja
from 15m or 5h3ee from 40m.
15m was lousy with fairly short propagation but still could have been much
worse. east was coming quite well and 60 jas is not so bad those days. it
closed early and usually the only station i could hear after sunset was 59+
cu2x working absolutely inaudible pile up. the same on 20m of course a bit
later:) best moments were finding su1km with second radio in big pile up at
08.30 utc the second day (my noon) and he agreed to do quick and successful
qsys to 20 and 40m. boy, i was happy for those 6 mults! thank you marko! agreed
sceds for 40 and 80m with 9m8z and vk6dxi, both worked just great in the
evening. but one of the most exiting moments of the contest was on 15m at 07.26
utc the first day when i got a call on a southern antenna and it was kh7u! lp! 3
hours past his sunset! i did not even remember that path like that existed! wow!
i was almost speechless, with those band conditions!
and now 10m. well, almost the only stations i could hear with 2nd radio were
e77a (the strongest) and df0hq. it did not seem to work so i decided to try cq
07.30 on sunday. luckily with 1 hour run i worked most of the mults then that
were accessible. the big guys still pushed through with brutal force!:) i was
very surpised to have vr2c and two bys call in! also 3 ua9 stations and all
from zone 18. no zone 17 was ever heard.
