9n1mm, father moran, is sk. i would like this thread to explore fully the 9n1mm qsl situation. as 9n7ud, i get inquiries about how to qsl 9n1mm.
1. my news, second hand, is that an american ham was his (or one of his?) qsl managers, and that that am. ham died, but his surviving girlfriend threw away all the 9n1mm logs there. to the best of my knowledge, there is now no way to confirm a logged contact with 9n1mm (january 2010).
2. i visited the father's school south of ktm in 1999 and was able to roam the main building freely. absolutely the only remaining visible ham radio item there was a black baseball cap with the white lettering, 9n1mm. it was on a file cabinet in the late father's library. no radios could be found, and there was no evidence of any antenna or antenna support. i was told there that there are no remaining ham radio written records present.
3. rumor has it that the father's radios were sold to unknowing hands and that someone saw parts of a th-6 serving as curtain rods.
4. no one, ham or otherwise, could be found in ktm who had any written records from the father's ham radio activities in ktm. do not bother to contact any native nepali hams with qsl queries--they have nothing to help.
5. n7eb says he is not a qsl manager for 9n1mm.
6. k4vud is definitely not able to answer 9n1mm qsl requests.

history: it is likely that father moran never had a real government ham radio license. apparently, he had the oral permission of the king, likely related to moran's communications help with troubled climbers on everest, but probably operated with no permission prior to that. the rumors say that after the oral permission, some unknown time after, moran was given written permission to operate his radio from the royal establishment (maybe the king). his high standing in the country kept him on the air.
it is likely that until the 1980s (?), nepal did not have a government licensing authority or office. by 1998, i am sure from a personal visit, that the government now has a regularized legal routine for granting ham licenses--permanent for permanent residents and temporary for visitors.

rumor has it that moran liked his drake b twins and that when someone sent a tr-7 to him, he had problems with that and went back to his twins. he also had, at one time, an l4-b and a sb-200.

moran's ham activities figure on a few pages of the only book about him, titled "moran of kathmandu." there a number of hits about him on google, however this statement is only based on rumors i have gathered over time and on my direct personal visits to kathmandu. it would be wonderful to have a more full story.
