largest hospital ship active in benin

the worlds largest private hospital ship the africa mercy is docked in the harbour of cotonou benin. with this unique ship the christian humanitarian organisation mercy ships is providing medical care to the poorest people in the world. the medical and support staff of over four hundred people takes care of thousands of medical treatments a year.


maybe this rings a bell, because you heard about it in your church or supported a mercy ships project before. it is also possible that it sounds familiar because of the 2007 radio dx-pedition where the dagoe foundation (dutch amateurs going on expedition) activated liberia with the call 5l2ms to support mercy ships. with a large number of qso’s, donations for a mercy ships project and material for the local ham community, a big success. this year the dagoe foundation will again organise a dx-pedition to support mercy ships. this time benin will be activated from a little coast town called grand popo. the team will be present in benin from october 7th until october 30th and expect to be on air from october 9th. some days will be dedicated to support on-site the mercy ships project. activities will take place on all hf bands in ssb, cw and rtty. a suitable antenna park will be available for all hf bands including low bands. the team also planned to take part in the cqww ssb in the weekend of october 24/25. operators are henk pa3aww, arie pa3an, bas pd0cav and ad pa8ad. since 2006 no licences were provided in benin, but with help from mercy ships and the benin government the team members received individual call signs as well as a project related call sign ty1ms. more information, a survey, movies, the online log and much more can be found on www.benin2009.com. all extra funding from qsl cards and donations will support the mercy ships project. your help is appreciated!
