rosalie white, k1sto, reports that the first-ever amateur radio on the
international space station (ariss) contact between china and the
international space station (iss) will take place august 26. american
astronaut clay anderson, kd5pla, will chat with students at the nanjing
no. 3 high school in nanjing, jiangsu in the people's republic of china.
the radio coordinator is michael chen, bd5rv. the school has been around
for more than 100 years and has 3000 students in 64 senior and junior
grade classes on three campuses. the school is well known for its
amateur radio club and its 6-time-national-winner women's volleyball
team. the amateur radio club has completed more than 20,000 qsos with
other stations from all over the world. there have been a total of 308
school-to-iss contacts to date.

1. ariss contact with new york community center
on tuesday, august 7, an amateur radio on the international space station (ariss) contact took place between the one stop richmond hill community center in queens, new york and clay anderson, kd5pla, via the telebridge station wh6pn in hawaii. twelve students had 23 questions answered by the astronaut as a gathering of 50 people looked on. there was some press interest in the event and the center expects to receive local media coverage. eleven stations connected to echolink from the usa and england, including 3 repeater nodes.

nanjing no. 3 high school in nanjing, jiangsu, p.r. china has been scheduled for an amateur radio on the international space station (ariss) contact on sunday, august 26 at 10:44 utc. to prepare for the contact, elective courses will be offered on amateur radio and contests will be held to determine the best essays and cartoons concerning ariss. other schools in the area will be invited to the event. the school has an active amateur radio club which was established in 1992 and has been a five time winner of the national youth amateur radio contest. local hams and businesses will support the students with the contact. extensive media coverage is expected from newspapers, television and radio stations and the internet.

nanjing no.3 high school has a history of over 100 years. it is a full-time school consists of 37 senior classes and 27 junior classes in three campuses. more than 3000 students are currently studying in this school. besides normal courses, chinese handwriting, english listening and speaking, computer, fundamental volleyball skills etc. are also taught in the school.
the school is well known for its women's volleyball team and amateur radio club. the women's volleyball team is a 4-time world champion and 6-time national winner. the amateur radio club has completed more than 20 thousand qsos with other stations from all over the world.
students will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:
1. can you see the great wall from the iss?
2. do you sweat in the space and how do you handle it?
3. if air leak happens in the iss, what emergency actions will be taken?
4. how do you handle the waste generated in the space?

14. what if you lost connection with the ground? is it possible for the spacecraft to go back to the earth automatically?

17. what is the longest distance between the iss and the earth?
18. which time zone do you use in the space?
19. what do you feel about space walk (eva)?

on sunday, 26 august 2007, starting at approximately 10:49 utc, there will be a contact between the iss and the nanjing no. 3 high school, nanjing, jiangsu, p.r.china. this is a direct contact between the ham radio ground station by4rrr located at the school. please join us in listening to this event.
the audio for this event will be fed into the echolink *amsat* (101 377), the *jsdxc* (337 784) and *jk1zrw* (277 208) servers. we hope that the audio from this event will also be fed into the irlp discovery reflector 9010. we hope to have good two way audio from this contact.
as we do normally, as soon as audio is suitable for transmission over amateur radio, we may be able to start feeding audio of set up activities from about 25 minutes prior to the start of the actual contact into echolink for listeners who enjoy listening in on these proceedings.
please note that there are automatic breaks in the audio transmission every 2.5 minutes during the event and while we listen to preparations going on for this contact. each audio break is approximately 1 second long. please configure your systems to not time out during times of inactivity or ongoing audio transmissions.

put this activity into its agenda and decided that the ariss program will be
