iss ham station now in crossband repeater mode for field day (jun 23, 2006) -- the amateur radio on the international space station (ariss) phase 2 station has been configured in crossband repeater mode for arrl field day! a chart of international space station field day pass times for north and south america appears at the end of "field day 2006: nasa releases iss north and south america pass times" on the arrl web site. "jeff williams, kd5tvq, activated the crossband repeater and even made some contacts over europe," nasa iss ham radio project engineer kenneth ransom, n5vho, told arrl on june 22. the crossband repeater uplink is 437.800 mhz. the downlink is 145.800 mhz. ransom reminds users that uplink doppler can be considerable. during field day weekend, the crossband repeater will be available only to low-power (qrp) stations following amsat criteria: no more than 10 w to a vertical or handheld antenna. ransom says williams and iss expedition 13 commander pavel vinogradov, rv3bs, may get on the air using the crossband configuration as time permits, but pass times for north america are not favorable, and williams and vinogradov are busy preparing for the arrival of the progress 22 supply vehicle. for field day, williams will give a report of "na1ss, 1 alpha iss," while vinogradov will give a report of "rs0iss, 1 alpha iss." contacts made via the iss crossband repeater count as satellite contacts for field day bonus points. contacts with the crew do not count for field day bonus points
