ic-706miig compared to ft-857
the 706 has a really big display and a big tuning knob and relatively easy to use buttons and menus. the 706 is easier to use in some ways than any of the yaesu radios due to buttons for often used functions that are menu items on yaesu radios. in other ways it's more difficult due to the multiple menu scheme. the 706 is
taller wider but has less depth than the 857. the control head is much bulkier. the 706 has a single cable for remoting the head whereas the 857 requires two. the dsp on the 706 is nearly useless except the notch filter which is excellent. the noise blanker is very weak. if the 857 dsp operates as expected (because it's the same as the 897) it blows my 706 away in this area. the receive on the 857 seems somewhat better in terms of sensitivity (the 100d seems to be even better by the way) the 706 is still a good radio however after over 3 years i"m swapping it out for the 857 because of the superior dsp, filters, noise blanker and other features. the 706 is definitely due for a modernization workover. it will become a remote base on my repeater
