cw may be old, outdated and surpassed but... by kb9tme on february 11, 2007 mail this to a friend!
i had to learn cw years ago for the us navy and promptly forgot most of it for the fact we had so many methods of digital communication that were far more efficient and faster. i recently went from an ht ham to a nice ic-7000 and last night i was listening in 7.025 after my band scope picked up some nice signals. the only thing i have is a loop antenna around my bedroom since i live in an apartment and i was rather discouraged at the lack of any reception till last night. i had a nice signal that i dialed in on and started listening. it took a while for the cobwebs to clear but i never forgot the sound of cq cq cq de and hit the record button on my rig. i played through it a number of times and the call bg6ivx was finally pulled out. i did a quick lookup and i was floored when this call was coming from zhengzhou city, china. i had no fancy antennas just some cheap wire from radio shack stapled around the edge of my bedroom and i was getting a signal nearly half way around the world. i picked up some rtty from california but the signal from china drew me like a moth to flame. i'm still just a no code tech since i got my license in high school and never learned cw till i was in the navy. i'm finally going to get off my #$% and get my general but if i can play nearly 10k kilometers on an antenna which cost me about $15 then i'm game. i'm use to doing comms over satellites but if you consider it cost me $15 for what i heard last night compared to millions for a satellite... i don't have any cw gear but it about time i ordered some so the next time i hear something from the other side of the planet i can say hello, when i get my hf privileges in the ham bands that is.
