a truly fun weekend!

with a heavy work travel schedule and trying to take two mba classes, i let my
wife talk me into not doing the contest seriously. operated the first 3 hours
and then went to bed. woke up early, did some dxing on the low bands and then
cqed for awhile. took the dog for a walk and ran some errands. worked more
guys. then went off to meet a classmate to work on a school project. came back
and had dinner. now almost 23 hours into the contest and i had already taken 12
hours off.

decided to see how the bands were. still good! decided i would stay up late
and see what i had missed by sleeping the first night. set goal of working 300
countries. finally made myself quit at 3am and went to bed. by now, the
contest bug is starting to bite. woke up 3 hours later and decided to crank up
the qso machine and see what i could do to get the qso totals respectable on all
bands. at the 24 hour mark of operating time i had 4meg. almost quit then, but
still having too much fun.

still 8 hours of the contest to go. can't stop because yccc president n1xs has
exhorted everyone to keep their butt in the chair. got this crazy idea that
maybe i could sneak into the top ten box. kept cqing and doing the so2r thing.
score kept going up. ended with an exhilarating run on 7000.6.

almost wish i had done the whole thing, but probably wouldn't have had as much
fun. winning cq ww is hard. you have to keep pushing all the time and make sure
you get good frequencies on the hot band. there is no time to rest or relax.
by sleeping the first night, i had no pressure and was able to go dxing when i
got tired of cqing. it actually helped me be more on the right band than if i
had been trying. not to mention how much more fun (and accurate) it is to
operate with enough sleep.

only ran into a few packet piles. most of the time i would just keep tuning.
did work to4ww on 40. had no idea where it was other than zone 39. turns out
to be an all time new one for me! (he was listening up 1-2 khz and it was
exactly the right thing to do. who says you can't work split in a contest?)

7s2e was still loud on 40m at 1130z. wow. on sunday morning, 40m was the best
i have ever heard over the pole to japan. 40 was wall to wall all the way up to
7100. my best runs sat night were on 7085 and 7076.

managed to work 2 ja stations on 80 saturday morning.

160 was funny. heard lots of stuff friday night but it couldn't hear me.
saturday managed to work a few eu, but it wasn't worth it. didn't matter
because 80 and 40 were so good.

overall operating was excellent. no real frequency fights. less than the usual
number of dupes. most people got my call right. didn't seem like i got spotted
as kh7d this year.

as always, amazing how many stations made big qso totals that i never even
heard. was really searching for n5tj at kp3z and only worked him on 1 band! he
had over 6000 qsos! worked vp9i, a45xr, and jy8yb on only one band. zd8z on 2
bands. heard a61aj on 160, but only worked him on 2 bands. that's part of what
makes this contest great. but also why packet is such an advantage of the
multi-ops. it is just too easy for the good stuff to get lost in the noise.

breakdown below. i assume rates were better than normal on day 2 because i
hadn't worked everyone on day 1.

yes, as this score shows, contesting isn't fair. only the new england advantage
makes it possible to do this well part time when far more worthy efforts out
west have lower scores.

what a great contest. the bands were wide open to eu and usa, but not so to ja
or pacific. only a few "watery" ja signals in the log, no vk or zl heard on any
band.

the "antenna farm" was down to a hf6vx vertical (yes!) and a lone 5l mono for
10.

the cqww cw rules!!!!!!!!!!!

only 19.8 h operation time as i could not be at the station from 22:30 to 08:30
both days, local time (gmt +3). first time in a contest since we got the new
shack that i had a good night's sleep and a shower.
thanks to all that called me, and i may have surprised some when i called them,
had some slack hours at my evening that i spent s&p looking for multipliers.
during my last hours i got calls that completed all 40 zones, thanks for that;
vu2ur(22), xe1ntt(6), xq6et(12).
leaving hz1ab at dhahran (just across from bhahrain,a92) for riyadh, 400km drive
through the desert, i had rain almost half of the way.

good propagations all weekend which is not usual at 64 degrees north. the new
stack of 2 x 3-el yagis, at 24 and 48 m above ground, worked very well. you may
see it at http://www.7s2e.sk2kw.se/ click on mast 3.

a total of 595 north american and 395 asian stations were worked. the european
stations were 1176. the remaining qso磗 were evenly spread between af, sa and
oc.
116 stations liked my signal enough to call in twice or more but these are not
included in the totals above.

thanks all for working me and cu in future contests.

:: looks like a new africa record ?

this was my 1st so2r effort, and 3rd soab ever!
(all of my dx efforts were single band, m/m, or 10 & 160 contests)

the trip - arriving on madeira and meeting luis ct3ee for the ride to the
station had me grinning from ear to ear, we kept going up! 3500' up. the first
views of the antennas blew me away... these guys erected a full m/m station!
separate towers for each band and a water shot 3500 feet below to europe and the
americas. unreal.

pre-contest i did have a couple hours before the contest tuning around and
working some piles to get a feel, but went into this one blind with no real
experience from this region on propagation. this hurt me for mults having to
"feel" my way through the world wide qrm! wow!

long path was amazing! working ja's south at 20 over s9 is pretty cool, but
only a few in the log!

so2r ?i sure learned to respect so2r, and kept my learning to the 2nd day
deciding to keep my focus on radio 1 at a pretty good pace, with 3333 in the log
by 00z. at hour 42 i began to really play so2r for real and the rate jumped way
up. (i抣l start earlier next time) even though, surely i seemed rookie status
to anyone who called me and heard an awkward silence. many of you left before i
figured out which radio was calling me! sorry guys, next year i'll have it
down.

operating highlights

3333 q's in 24 hours
multiple high rate hours 190-200s
china calling over the top of a pile up

operating low lights

having to leave the radio for a walk to shake the sleep,
then a 1 hour nap because i couldn't. i really didn't
want to, but had to, i was going down.

it's an unreal experience with the "locals" on 160 being ea8, d4, cn, ct3, 5u
etc.. didn't seem real.
this may be why i missed ct3 on 160! and about 20-50 other very easy ones.

thanks kl9a for the audio mixer for so2r ?impossible without it.

special thanks to team madeira - cq9k cq9k cq9k !

soapbox: a remarkable trip for us this year - no transportation or customs
problems,
no radio, computer, network or antenna failures. our big, expensive
generator decided to take
a siesta, so we were at the mercy of the local power company. fortunately
for us, the
power stayed on all weekend. also we didn't experience any major solar
events like the
last three years. special thanks to dave, w6nl, for racing around the
countryside in
search of replacement generator parts, and to tim, n4gn for arranging
logistics
in case parts needed to be air shipped.

some new guys on the team this year - tree, n6tr finally made it to hc8 and
had a great time.
will, aa4nc and ken, n6ro were the other first-time ops. all three were
major contributors
and we hope they come back next year. javier, w6vms was also part of the
entourage.

thanks for all the q's - see you next year!
