  tcxo-9
  mh-59a8j microphone

ft-857 is an excellent rig   time owned: 0 to 3 months
i just got my new 857 about two weeks ago and have fired it up on 2m,40m and 20m so far. what a treat to operate!! everything works just
fine so far. i have set my hf power to 20 watts and worked across ontario on 40m and into florida on 20m. using a hi-gain 14avq vertical antenna for hf and a j-pole for 2m. i was licensed about 45 years ago and have not
been active on hf for about 30 years. this rig is a real treat since i can use it at home, the cottage or in the car. thanks yaesu for such
a great product. highly recommended.

still a great rig   time owned: 6 to 12 months
after 8 months with this radio i'm still impressed. i've not had any of the issues that other users have. it's worked flawlessly for me. i've slowly explored its many features with still more to discover. if i have any complaint it would be the rx audio. not the best i've heard, but it hasn't impacted my enjoyment of this radio. the dsp and a good quality external speaker helped alot.

my next addition will be an ssb filter and the atas-120. i'm getting a little tired of switching antennas

excellent mobile/portable radio   time owned: 3 to 6 months
traded up from an ft-817 (miss the built in battery pack!)so that i could have a small footprint rig for operating on battery power and as rare dx while on vacations. have used the rig qrp in the arrl sweepstakes, both cw and ssb, and found the dsp filter and clarifier good enough to separate close signals. just finished participating in both the cqww cw/ssb contests at 100 w with excellent scores and some nice new ones.
i put an entire station together in a small jansport backpack, 12v-12a radio shack battery, mfj 948 mobile tuner, bencher key, headphones, and the ft-857 in an off-the shelf cordova bag for extra protection. with the 12a battery, i can run at 25-50 w for a few hours.
there is a learning curve for both menus, but it is worth the effort. can hardly wait to take it overseas and start working a pile-up.
the ft-857 makes: (1) good first rig, (2) great back-up rig, (3) excellent portable/mobile/backpak
rig, and (4) also a great emergency power communications system.
in short, i love my 857!

excellant radio   time owned: 0 to 3 months
fantastic radio. sold an ic746 to get it and don't regret it at all. the 746 was a fine radio but this is an outstanding radio also with plenty of bells and whistles and a very good dsp that i got for free. on top of that i am getting $175 dollars back from yaesu because of a christmas rebate plan which means i made an even trade for my 857 with my 746. again excellant radio. wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone.

keith
