We can’t for the life of us understand why some Hams get mad when they’re deemed, “not in the log” (NIL).
Today, on 40 Meters SSB we listened to VP8SGI working from South Georgia. We split the VFO’s and listened to both sides of QSO’s for a couple hours. After TWO HOURS of complete chaos (until we couldn’t take it anymore), here’s what we came away with: There’s a lot of folks who don’t hear well. There’s a lot of folks that don’t hear at all. There’s a lot of folks who don’t listen, and even more that don’t have a clue. Finally, there’s a lot of folks that simply don’t deserve to have a QSO with ANY DXpedition. In fact, they’re not even deserving to be called, “Amateur Radio Operators”.
Here’s an example:
“Who’s the Kilo Five? Kilo Five Go Ahead”
Whiskey Nine blah, blah, blah
“Kilo Five Alpha Sierra Sierra, you’re five and nine”
Roger, Roger, Roger but it’s Whiskey Nine blah, blah, blah, you’re also five and nine
Oh my! Imagine the heartbreak after Whiskey Nine blah, blah, blah sent $20 and a QSL card to VP8SGI and gets a return of his $20 and a nice little sticky note that says “Sorry, not in log”.
Of course Whiskey Nine blah, blah, blah gets on eHam, QRZ and other Internet forums/blogs and voices his displeasure with the DXpedition because there must be some kind of logging mistake on the part of the DXpedition operator! He’s 100% absolutely positive he worked them, and they didn’t log him correctly! He’s been robbed, call the cops!
Examples like this make us Lid Listers very happy. One thing that would make us even happier would be if the DXpedition kept the donation money and returned all these bozo’s QSL cards with sticky notes that said, “thanks for the donation, not in the log. NIL”.
But not to worry all you “not in the log” people of the world! Even though your attempted bribe didn’t get you and your imaginary QSO into the logbook, it got you listed here on Lid List. Why you ask? Because well, frankly, you actually earned it!
