hi
you read the emails i exchanged with raymond vr2vjj from hong-kong.
while i was trying to fix the problem with the degrees character,i faced the
problem of asian hams and packet.
it is the language. there are no stations from japan, korea etc. we all know
that japan has much more hams than usa. i know that in japan there is a
local aprs like system but we cannot communicate/ interchange info with
them.
since i am preparing agwtracker for international translation, i understood
that they need to send status text, beacons and messages in their language.
uiview for instance does not accept greek letters although are in ascii
character set, and assume this is true also for french or german.
agwtracker can handle greek, france etc but not japanese.
so the last 4-5 days i am changing the code. right now i almost finished. i
contact pete the author of javaprs server and told me that will be no
problem with aprs servers.
i run some tests here and agwtracker with packet engine can send/receive
unicode characters.
for those who don't understand unicode. a character in english and most
european languages is a single byte since the alphabet has just 24-26
letters.
on the other hand japanese, chinese etc have around 50000 characters. so
windows from winnt and then use the unicode character set instead of ascii.
in unicode each character is 2 bytes long. so in asci my call is "sv2agw" in
unicode is "#s#v#2#a#g#w" the # means unprintable character.
hope with the help of raymond to release a new version that will support
asian languages.
this new version will be only for win2000/xp. so if you are running win2000
or xp be ready to use it. it will run faster and will be more reliable.
