good workhorse time owned: more than 12 months
after more then 8 years almost daily use still ticking fine.
replaced the fans an few times, cleaning out dust regularly, and did some mods on it.
giving it an 1 out of 5 points is not fair just because the transciever has clicks in cw.
for what it was advertised for, it does it all, and then some more.
as hf transciever, to compare it barefoot with the top line transcievers wich were made just for h.f and fully loaded with filters and all extra's, that is not fair...
i installed the extra filters from collins the day i bought it, replaced the bandswitch diodes with h.p low noise schottky diode's and some more mods in the 8 years i have the ft 847, it does perform very well.
with the fd-4 at just 40 feet from the ground i worked all i wanted to work, what other ham's here in my direct neighbourhood could work with an more expensive setup, i worked as well.
maybe it is the syndrome of my transciever is more expensive, so it must be better?
operating practice makes up an lot...

a solid radio time owned: more than 12 months
i've had mine for about 7 years now. not had a problem. i've done it all with this rig, cw, ssb, 2 meters, 440, satellite, cross band, you name it. it's simply a great all around rig. and it drives the qro amplifiers well.
as for the cw clicks, because it isn't a genuine 'full break in' qsk machine the tx/rx relays do switch in and out and there is an audible click. so?
most cw operators wear cans (headphones) anyhow to focus on the cw so that keeps the relay clicks out of being a concern. the critic who mentioned the clicks only said the 847's he's heard all made clicks which indicates to me he wasn't a proud owner of these versatile radios, but merely a bystander. in my 30+ years in radio i've settled on yaesu with 3 different rigs, i haven't done a lot of rig swapping because there wasn't a need. they've always given me solid performance.
